Welcome to the first Friday for Funsies post, where I use my Fridays for fun things rather than not-fun things (like homework, for instance; no need for that on a Friday)! It’s not always something strictly book related, but today, it absolutely has a lot to do with books, specifically the books I haven’t read.
I know I have a TBR list. I’d be willing to bet that you have a TBR. I bet a lot of people we know have TBRs, too, even if they’re not reading this post.
TBRs are everywhere. They are tall, a little terrifying, and maybe omnipotent. It’s entirely possible.
Buuuuuuut they’re also pretty much the best thing around. What else is so exciting and endless and easily replenished? What else covers so many topics (provided your TBR isn’t the same four books ten thousand times)? TBRs are great and I love them, and today I’m gonna share my top five TBR books with you!
1. Iron Cast by Destiny Soria
The summary on this book includes one of my favorite combos of all time: magic goings-on and (roughly) the 1920s. I don’t know what it is about the two that is such a compelling sort of aesthetic for me, but it loops me right in and doesn’t let go. As soon as I read this, you’ll be sure to hear about it!
2. Everless by Sara Holland
I am a sucker for time travel. A total sap. And while Everless isn’t strictly time travel, as far as I can tell, it’s a lot of meddling with time, which means there’s going to be lots of consequences. I love time-meddling consequences very, very much, because something is bound to go wrong, which also means something is bound to be dramatic. Possibly filled with angst, which I also love.
3. Song of the Current by Sarah Tolcser
Yeah, yeah, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” I know. But look how pretty this cover is! How blue and starry and generally lovely! Also, according to the summary, it’s about a girl who is getting absolutely nowhere with her river god and takes matters into her own hands instead. Please send me more books with main characters looking at gods and going, “Nah, don’t you, pal.” Please.
4. The Seafarer’s Kiss by Julia Ember
There’s Norse mythology and mermaids (mermaids outsmarting Norse gods, specifically!), which means I’m already sold. Plus I want more LGBT lit on my shelves that’s not solely about coming out or queer angst, especially books with queer girls. I needed to see myself in that when I was younger and didn’t get the chance. Now is the time! Now!
5. Furyborn by Claire Legrand
I have been excited for this book for so long. The cover is gorgeous, and even better, it’s a split-time narrative! I love it when books have one plot thread in the past and another in the present that are inexorably wound together, and this shows a lot of promise. As soon as it’s in my hands, you can bet I’m going to burn through it at the speed of light and share all about it!
I can’t wait to get my hands on these five books, plus so many more. I really can’t. What about you, though? What’s on your TBR that you’re most excited about? I shouldn’t be practically inviting an expansion to my TBR, but come on: we all want more books, right?
I approve of Everless being on your tbr but it’s not about time travel. It’s about blood magic and time being used as currency. Still plays with time, though, and it’s still a pretty enjoyable book. AND HOW HAVE I NOT HEARD OF THE SEAFAIRER’S KISS. I want to read it and also LOOK AT THAT COVER. I need it.
Playing with time is the goal! AND ISN’T SEAFARER SO GREAT LOOKING I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
