I’m always looking for more books with witches. Always. It is a known law of the universe that a words gremlin needs her witches, and it probably explains why so much of what I write gets witchy. That’s just the way of things.
It also means that I have a list of witchy books here to recommend, which is the best way to finish the week.
Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
Have I recommended this a thousand times? Yes. Will I keep recommending it? YES. I love the world in the Witchlands series, I love the magic, and I love the adventure. I also love Iseult with all my heart, and since the series reminds me a little of Avatar: The Last Airbender, it basically owns my soul, which is why it goes at the top of today’s list. Also? The covers are so pretty in pretty much all editions, which is an awesome bonus. I think the US Windwitch cover is my favorite, though…
House of Ivy and Sorrow by Natalie Whipple
Okay, I haven’t actually read this one, but I love the colors of the cover, and I’m almost always down for family secrets and murder, especially if its as witchy as the Goodreads page leads me to believe. It feels like it’s going to be spooky and eerie and what have you, and I can’t wait to read it!
Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova
Okay, here’s another one I’ve probably recommended before but LOOK AT IT. Isn’t that cover stunning? Enchanting? Fascinating? The answer is yes, AND even better, it matches the book inside.Β Labyrinth Lost was one of my favorite books last year because it was imaginative and witchy and queer and culturally diverse (most of the main characters are Latinx, and if I remember right, Rishi is not white), and I read it as fast as I could, devouring every word. Don’t be fooled by the apparently heteronormative summary, either. I promise you it’s definitely queer, and it’s so nice to see genre fiction where the conflict doesn’t stem from characters grappling with their sexuality. They just are who they are, and the world has to be saved. Priorities.
The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco
I think all witchy books have to have good covers, and this is no exception (and the covers for the other two books are just as pretty)! I love how purple and ominous the cover is, and how you really get the sense of something wicked on the way from it.
That said, I’ll admit this book wasn’t for me. I didn’t really love the pacing, and it was hard for me to get through. I like my rip-roaring action and big character casts. That said, though, the prose was lovely and the world and its magic absolutely incredible. I can see why people rave about it even though I wasn’t a huge fan myself, so it deserves to go on this witchy list for sure.
What are your favorite witchy books? What do you wish you could see more of in witchy lit? Which witch is your favorite of all time?
Bone Witch is absolutely stunning. It’s a shame you didn’t enjoy it as much as you had hoped. And you pretty much sold me on Truthwitch the second you mentioned Avatar the Last Airbender. It’s honestly the best animated TV series of all time.
Yeah, I’m bummed I didn’t like it! I wanted to, but I think the pacing was just too slow, and it really didn’t hold my attention.
Sooz has said herself that Truthwitch is a bit of a love letter to A:TLA, so I’m not just making that one up, haha. And you’re absolutely right: there’s never been a better cartoon EVER. Nothing can top A:TLA.
Haha! I might have to check it out if that’s the case…
If you do, I hope you enjoy it!
I should really add more witches to my books !! though id like more.. real witch stories??
I don’t know xD Thank you for thoses! I’ll check them out !
More witches on your TBR is never a bad thing! I hope you like the ones in this post, and you find others worth reading too!
