Been a while since there’s been a tag on the blog, hm? But fear not, the dry spell is over and we’re going back to the future to the 80s for it! You can thank Meeghan @ Meeghan Reads for tagging me in this one and bringing a bit of Throwback Tuesday (listen, Thursday already has something scheduled, I’m sorry!) into our lives!
So. Let’s go back.
Actually, before we start, shout out to Ashley @ Infinite Library for creating the tag and the really cute graphics that go with it!
But NOW let’s go back!
A Book That Kept You Up All Night
The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud
I read this one WAYYYYYY too late, and alas, poor chicken me was spooked out her mind by the time of finishing. Why I keep reading ghost books late at night when I know they’ll leave me all on edge, nobody knows! To be fair, though, this one is excellent and leads into the rest of a really good series. So fair trade, one night of being very creeped out in exchange for a solid series?
I haven’t seen A Nightmare on Elm Street!
A Wonderfully Quotable Book
A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab
There are SO MANY QUOTES from this book (and series!) floating around the internet, and with good reason. It’s absurdly quotable, and even though I’m terrified of needles, I’m very tempted to get an ADSoM tattoo in the future, probably one of the magical words (and probably as athera, to be honest).
But yeah. I may have a few ADSoM quotes stored away on my brain, ready for immediate recall…
I have seen The Princess Bride!
A Character Who Loves Breaking the Rules
Stevie from the Truly Devious Series by Maureen Johnson
Sure, Stevie seems to try to follow the rules, but also? The girl will do anything to solve a mystery, including break so many rules all at once. Anything for the truth, right?
I have seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off!
A Book Couple That Took an Eternity to Get Together
Aeduan and Iseult from Bloodwitch by Susan Dennard
If you read my Bloodwitch review, you’ll know I couldn’t STAND shipping Aeduan and Iseult together until the very end of the book, when suddenly, it was absolutely PERFECT for all of my shipping tastes. I’m still kind of in shock, but this isn’t the first time that Sooz has written something so well that I pulled a 180 on the way I thought about a character before.
Anyways, it took them only three whole stinking books to get to something that I consider shippable, and technically?
THEY AREN’T TOGETHER.
I haven’t seen When Harry Met Sally!
A Book Involving Time Travel
The Passenger Duology by Alexandra Bracken
I loved loved LOVED reading this duology because the way time travel is tied to music fascinated me, and I also really liked the romance (which is, in a way, rare for me). It’s one of those series I also really wish I had hardcovers of and not ebooks, because the covers are just so pretty. 😍
I have seen Back to the Future!
A Character with a Unique Style
Rose Marshall from the Ghost Roads Series by Seanan McGuire
What else can I say? Rose’s green silk gown is iconic. It’s what makes her the hitchhiking ghost of legend in the Ghost Roads series, and it’s the outfit she returns to when the situation is most dire, the one her spirit is most tied to. It’s because of that gown that you know who’s hitching a ride with you.
I haven’t seen Pretty in Pink!
Favorite Book Involving the Training/Mentoring Trope
The Abyss Surrounds Us Duology by Emily Skrutskie
Cass’s training sessions with Bao are perhaps unconventional enough not to fit the trope, but she also has training with the other pirates she’s living with, including some sexual tension sparring, so… 😏
I have seen part of The Karate Kid!
A Book with a Trip That Doesn’t Go to Plan
The Last Magician Series by Lisa Maxwell
In both books, Esta’s trips go very, very sideways, and she has to constantly replan on the fly. It’s not the ideal road trip by any means, but what can you do? Time travel is fickle.
I haven’t seen Die Hard!
A Book with the Central Character’s Name in the Title
Sadie by Courtney Summers
I’d say this one is pretty self-explanatory. Also, please read this book because I’m still wrecked and I finished it almost a week ago? Or come talk to me if you’ve finished it because wow. Wow.
I have seen Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark!
A Female Character Who Comes Out of Her Shell
Lei from Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan
Lei is absolutely one of my favorite characters because I feel so strongly for her, and because she takes the absolutely horrific circumstances she’s forced into and stands up for herself. She changes so much over the course of the book, and I adore her for it.
I have seen part of Dirty Dancing!
A Death That Took You by Surprise
[REDACTED] from Descendant of the Crane by Joan He
No spoilers, since it isn’t out yet and I was lucky enough to read an ARC, but OH MY GOD.
THIS ONE WAS A CRUEL DEATH AND I STILL ACHE.
I haven’t seen Top Gun!
An Ending That Left You Both Happy and Sad
A Conjuring of Light by VE Schwab
This book nailed bittersweet in its ending, and while I know we’ll be getting more in the shape of the Threads of Power trilogy, the ending of ACoL still gets me all emotional when I think about it. What a well done way to raise the stakes and finish the series.
Now I need a minute because I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS.
I have seen ET and it scarred me for life as a child!
I TAG…
Kaleena — Kait — Isabelle — Libby — Sav
And you, if you want to do it!
I’d love to see your answers if you do it, but no pressure to take it on!
Have fun reading more books and watching more movies, folks!
Throwback Tuesday – I love it!!
Haha, good, I’m glad!
Muahahaha this is my kind of tag, thank you!
You’re welcome!! Have fun!! 😎
Great answers! YES ADSOM. I love that series so much. Definitely super quotable and full of emotions. 🙂
I read Truly Devious last month so I’ll probably read The Vanishing Stair very soon. I’m looking forward to it.
I absolutely loved Sadie. Don’t worry, it wrecked me too. That end will get me forever.
So cute that you included all the movies you’ve seen!
Thanks so much! Ugh, ADSoM and the whole series just remains one of my favorites even it it did repeatedly stab me. ♥️
Oh, enjoy! The Vanishing Stair was SO MUCH FUN for me. I hope you like it!
Tbh I’m haunted in the best way by Sadie, absolutely stunning.
Haha, Meeghan did it in her post too! Figured I should do it as well. 😊
It’s one of my faves too. I’d love to do a reread at some point. Oh gosh, so much stabbing. My poor heart. 😭
That’s so good to hear! I think I might read it next now that I’ve finished my current read. Bring on more Stevie.
Sadie was so good. I’m glad I found it and got to read it. Traumatising but amazing.
That’s good reasoning! 😁
