The Wednesday Pen || NaNoWriMo 2020 Check-In #4

The end is in sight, but also? It’s so far away.

NaNoWriMo 2020, while technically on pace for every check-in, has been a rollercoaster. Some days, I slam out over 3,000 words. Other days, I squeeze in a couple hundred before I hide under the covers and get some rest. Even though I’ve tried to plan out a writing calendar, it seems like I never know how it’ll go from one day to the next.

At least today, though, I can tell you how it’s gone!

Current Word Count

Last week, I was shooting for 37,368 words by the time I sat down to write this post. Happily, I’m at 40,198 words instead! I can’t remember for sure if this is the first NaNoWriMo where I’ve stayed ahead of my goal for each check-in, but it feels good regardless. The pressure is still on, sure, but it’s not quite as dramatic as it could be.

Long story short, I’m so relieved this hot mess of a NaNo attempt is still somehow on track!

Favorite Line

“Woe is the manor, woe is the heir!”

Is this a load of words just slapped onto the page and vaguely tied to a character backstory? Yes. But does it sound extremely ominous and cool, and maybe even befitting a haunted mansion in an earth cliffside setting?

Please say yes, y’all. I don’t have a lot to go with this line except the inkling of something bigger on the horizon. I just have to chase it and find out what it is. 🥺

Favorite Character

As with last week, I’m still in love with Sariel, the OC I lovingly crammed into my Lucifer fic. Nothing has really changed except that I made her really sad this week, but I actually can’t say that’s too different than normal. My NaNoWriMo 2020 goal was original all about the angst, and my regular writing tends to be hurt/comfort heavy. What can I say? I love making a perfectly good character and then whacking them over the head with a Whole Lotta Bad™. It’s cathartic. And maybe even fun!

(Just not for the characters involved, ever. Sorry, but also extremely not sorry.)

Goals for This Week

Well, let’s be obvious: by the time I see you next Wednesday, I aim to cross that 50,000 word threshold! Somehow, despite everything, the end of November is creeping up on us fast, and I intend to meet it head on. Is it a little daunting? Sure, especially since I have to squeeze my last words in around work. Frankly, it could get a little tricky.

But the end is in sight, and I’m not a fan of giving up this close to the finish! 😤

As ever, if you’re doing NaNoWriMo 2020, or even if you aren’t, we should chat! You can find me on Twitter (but only after I watch the GBBO finale on Friday), and on the official NaNoWriMo site. Happy writing, folks! 💛
