The Wednesday Pen || Why I’m Not Doing NaNoWriMo This Year

Normally, I write a very different post in November.

I also write it at the beginning of the month, and it goes a little something like “I’m already 5k into NaNoWriMo!” or “Help me, I’m somehow 10k behind my word goal and we just started”. But this Wednesday Pen installment isn’t about celebrating the number of words I’ve written this month.

Honestly, it’s kind of celebrating not writing at all.

So here we are, halfway through NaNoWriMo 2021, and for the first time in seven years, I’m not participating. Knowing that, what comes next?

The Wednesday Pen || December 2020 Writing Recap

I’ll admit it now: I’ve written next to nothing this month.

Normally, I’d hate to write that. But this Wednesday Pen comes on the heels of NaNoWriMo, and it marks the end of 2020. Frankly, I think we all deserve a little rest here, and I’ll take any words I can get right now.

Thankfully, December wasn’t entirely full of rest, and I did eke out a few batches of personal words, so today, we’ll dig into those! Continue reading “The Wednesday Pen || December 2020 Writing Recap”

The Wednesday Pen || NaNoWriMo 2020 Wrap

Sometimes, you sprint over the finish in a burning bolt of glory.

And sometimes you kind of trip and fall backwards over it, still finishing the race. NaNoWriMo 2020 has come to a close, and somehow, I made it to the end. Was it a graceful finish? Maybe not, but I have 50k shiny new words and a renewed sense of enjoyment in my writing. What could be better than that?

(The answer is a detailed wrap. Trust me. And also read on, if you really trust me.)

The Wednesday Pen || NaNoWriMo 2020 Check-In #4

The end is in sight, but also? It’s so far away.

NaNoWriMo 2020, while technically on pace for every check-in, has been a rollercoaster. Some days, I slam out over 3,000 words. Other days, I squeeze in a couple hundred before I hide under the covers and get some rest. Even though I’ve tried to plan out a writing calendar, it seems like I never know how it’ll go from one day to the next.

At least today, though, I can tell you how it’s gone!

The Wednesday Pen || NaNoWriMo 2020 Check-In #3

Why write original content when you can write fanfiction instead?

I truly did not mean for NaNoWriMo 2020 to turn into a fic extravaganza, but here we are, almost 30,000 words in. I’d say it’s a little late to turn back now. Wouldn’t you agree?

The Wednesday Pen || NaNoWriMo 2020 Check-In #2

Is it really NaNoWriMo without a project in crisis?

Last week, I was bound and determined to make tracks on my angsty sentient weaponry WIP. This week, I’ve realized it wasn’t quite ready for NaNoWriMo 2020, and it needs to sit on the back burner for a while longer, until it develops better structure.

Which means in the middle of NaNo, I’m changing my project. And honestly, it’s a bit like stepping off a cartoon cliff. A moment of weightlessness, then a puff of smoke and a high speed plummet to earth.

And weirdly enough, it’s working.

I can’t believe it’s already here.

2020 has been a mess on all counts, and to tell the truth, I’m still rattled from the election yesterday. I’ve actually stayed offline for the most part, so pardon me if I don’t say much about it. NaNoWriMo 2020 is an oasis from the dumpster fire that is the rest of the year, and I’m trying to preserve that so I’m ready for future days.

The Wednesday Pen || October 2020 Writing Recap

One day, I will do my NaNoWriMo prep early.

Today, though, is not that day. Welcome to another edition of the Wednesday Pen, where I promise to learn my lesson about writing and then promptly do the opposite! At least it’s entertaining, though, right?

The Wednesday Pen || September 2020 Writing Recap

Does 4k words justify a fresh Wednesday Pen?

Especially when last month, I told myself I wouldn’t measure it in word count, but instead in progress on the relevant project? And when I…did not meet that goal in time for the newest Wednesday Pen?

Even if it doesn’t count, folks, we’re doing it anyway. Welcome to the September edition of the Wednesday Pen!

The Wednesday Pen || August 2020 Writing Recap

The Wednesday Pen is now a quarterly publication!

At least, it will be at this rate. 🤦 There hasn’t been a Wednesday Pen since May because of my hiatus, and I’m going to be recapping an entire three months’ of writing today. Buckle up, too, because apparently I had the bug during my hiatus.

And naturally, it was on every project except the one I set out to do.
